Hope you all are doing lovely and feeling great. Yes a DGR! post is coming early this week. I have a special post coming up on Monday, so be back for that.
Next up on the Dark-Skinned Girls Rock! series is the lovely Reiko! I came across Reiko's blog, God's Favorite Shoes, one day and was totally enamored. I contacted her on twitter and told her that I loved her blog. I admire her effortless style and her shoe game is ridiculous. Reiko if you ever get tired of your shoes, you know where to send them lol.
Reiko
Everybody meet Reiko, a stylish 36 year old teacher from Houston, TX!
Describe yourself in 3 words: Funny, loyal, Virgo.
Tell us about your personal style:
It's ever changing. I have noticed that I don't like to wear an outfit the same way more than once or twice.
It's ever changing. I have noticed that I don't like to wear an outfit the same way more than once or twice.
Who are your style icons: Solange and Jenna Lyons.
Have you ever struggled with self-identity issues because of your
complexion? If so what are some things you did to accept and love yourself for who you are?
I can't say that I have ever allowed my
complexion to affect me. I don't recall any direct issues but I have
experienced it indirectly. I remember when I was much younger, I would
go out with my friends who were "lighter" than me and they seemed to
always get noticed the most. I'm not saying that it was the only reason
but I do know it was a factor. It never mattered much to me
though. The
dudes were always suckas anyway.
Do you have any advice for other dark-skinned women that are struggling
with accepting themselves because of the color of their skin?
I think a
lot of time can be spent on the "negative" things about ourselves.
Whether it is our weight, or the length of our hair...there is always
something that we can beat ourselves up about. But why waste that
energy? It's only an issue if you allow it to be an issue.
What do you like most about being dark-skinned?
Well there you have it! I love how Reiko said we shouldnt waste our energy thinking about the "negative" things about ourselves. And she is so right, things only become an issue if WE allow it to. Lets not make issues out of nothing ladies!
Don't forget to check out Reiko's blog, God's Favorite Shoes, and catch her tweeting @godsfaveshoe. According to Reiko, the 11th commandment is "Style Shall NEVER Be Sacrificed". Haha I love it!
Another DGR! post will be up next week. If you are interested in being featured in the series, shoot me an email, cherrie.amore@gmail.com.
