Dark-skinned Girls Rock!: Maureen

Hey Everyone,

Hope you all are doing lovely and feeling great. Today for the Dark-skinned Girls Rock! series, we're featuring Maureen from The Funshion Mistress. Find out more about her below!

Maureen Bandari
Everyone meet Maureen. Shes a 24 year old recent college graduate from Kenya!

Describe yourself in 3 words. Humble, cheerful and outgoing.

Tell us about your personal style. My style is chic, edgy but mostly simple and colorful.

Who are your style icons? My style icons are Solange Knowles and June Ambrose.

Have you ever struggled with self-identity issues because of your complexion? If so what are some things you did to accept yourself for who you are and love yourself?
In Africa, everyone is Black so I didn't quite struggle with identity except for maybe later in life with some light-skinned girls because my skin is a little darker than most. I have had a few comments thrown my way in the past that made me wonder what beauty is. That changed when I was at a salon once and one of the girls kept saying how my skin was glowing..it really made me realize that the only thing that matters is how you think about yourself. There will always be at least one person in the world who wishes they had something you have!

Do you have any advice for other dark-skinned women that are struggling with accepting themselves because of the color of their skin?
I would advise them to love themselves just the way they are. People should be able to take you for who you are and not what you think they will. We were all made in God's image and that is how it was meant to be.

What do you like most about being dark-skinned?

The thing I love most about dark-skinned is that scars don't show that easy and I don't have to use a lot of sunscreen either. I look good in colorful outfits...they compliment my dark skin. If you really take care of yourself by eating right, exercising, and drinking water it helps with the glow of your complexion.

Thank you so much Maureen for participating in the series!! You have such a gorgeousssss complexion. Oh my! Please be sure to check out Maureen's blog, The Funshion Mistress, and you can catch her tweeting @mohbandz!
