Dark-skinned Girls Rock!: Dinesha

Hey Everyone,

Hope you all are doing lovely and feeling great! Today for the Dark-skinned Girls Rock! series, we're featuring Dinesha from Deejay Speaks. Find out more about her below!

Dinesha Johnson
Everybody meet Dinesha. She's 18 years old and from Ecorse, Michigan!

Describe yourself in 3 words. Confident, determined, and goal-oriented.

Tell us about your personal style.
My personal style is all about subtle boldness. I like to have at least one stand out piece in everything I wear whether its highlighting the print in a look, a pair of earrings, or letting the color in my look take all the attention.

Who are your style icons?
My style icons are, Dionne from Clueless lol. I've always loved her daring looks and I hope to embody that someday. Diana Ross is one of my style icons as well because of all her hair and her beautiful makeup looks!

Have you ever struggled with self-identity issues because of your complexion? If so what are some things you did to accept yourself for who you are and love yourself?
When I was younger, I blamed my dark skin for everything. I thought boys didn't like me [because of my skin color]. I allowed myself to feel inferior because of my complexion. As I matured and I came to recognize the goals I had for myself, I realized that I can't let the color of my skin define me, nor can I hate it. In order for me to reach my full potential I would have to love all of what I am, and be confident in who I was as a whole.

Do you have any advice for other dark-skinned women that are struggling with accepting themselves because of the color of their skin?
The advice I'd give a fellow dark skinned women is to not see your skin as a flaw. Your skin is a beautiful gift. Love your appearance and looks because it's the only skin you're ever going to have. Its so much better loving yourself than focusing on what you wrongfully think is a flaw.

What do you like most about being dark-skinned?
I love how my skin has a slight gleam to it. I love how my makeup stands out so glowingly against my skin. I love my skin because my gorgeous mother is also dark and I've always admired her beauty.

Thank you Dinesha for participating in the series!! Love how you said that we should not see our skin as a flaw, but as a beautiful gift! That is definitely food for thought.  Don't forget to check out Dinesha's blog, Deejay Speaks and you can catch her tweeting, @deejayhasspoken.
