I'm Loving My Pastel Blazer

Hey Everyone,

Hope you all are doing lovely and feeling great! I meant to post this in the morning, but I woke up late and had to rush to work. Better late than never right ;). Anywho, I wore the outfit below to a friend of a friend's baby shower. Its very simple, yet chic. All black with pops of color with.

Hmm...I must say I'm on a roll with the spring trends. I wore neon in the last post and now I'm rocking a lovely pastel peach blazer in this post (which I absolutely love btw). Enjoy the pics :).

Dark-Skinned Girls Rock!: Rocquelle

Hey Everyone.

Hope you all are doing lovely and feeling great! Its Monday, so you know another Dark-skinned Girls Rock! post is coming your way. Today we are featuring the lovely Roquelle of Consider Me Lovely. I've been a follower of Rocquelle's blog for sometime now and I love her style. She always has the sickest arm party and the best nails. She also has a such a sweet spirit that emanates through her posts.

Rocquelle P.
Everybody meet Rocquelle! Shes a 26 year old Grad student, blogger, and budding entrepenuer from Houston, TX.

Describe yourself in 3 words. Lovely, confident, and intelligent.

Tell us about your personal style. Colorful, eclectic and feminine, with an edge.

Who are your style icons?
I don’t really have style icons, as I’m not one to pour over magazines or celebrity style. However, if i must choose, I love the style of Diana Ross, Claire Huxtable (yes I know she’s a television character, lol), Tracee Ellis Ross, June Ambrose, and the older ladies in my church who wear lots of sparkle and big hats!

Have you ever struggled with self-identity issues because of your complexion? If so what are some things you did to accept yourself for who you are and love yourself?
I don’t know that I struggled with self-identity issues, as I was very aware of who I was in terms of complexion, but I did struggle with self-esteem issues for a long time because of my complexion. I honestly didn’t really come into fully loving my skin until I was an adult. I was fortunate to have women in my life who always told me I was beautiful, but it didn’t really become real for me, until I stepped out of my comfort zone and cut my hair off and started dreadlocks. My lengthy permed hair was my crutch for self-esteem, so when I looked in the mirror with itty bitty dreadlocks, I was forced to own my beauty, ALL of it, complexion and all. Mentally, the thing that became most important in accepting and loving myself, was not worrying about what other people said or thought, because it was the words of others, that led to my dislike of my dark skin (the crazy thing is I didn’t hate the dark skin of others, just my own). I wrote more about this last year in this post.

Do you have any advice for other dark-skinned women that are struggling with accepting themselves because of the color of their skin?
Your skin is BEAUTIFUL!! It is naturally kissed by the sun and glows like no other. Stop comparing yourself to others, and only surround yourself with people who embrace you. Sometimes, learning to love your skin requires you to step out of your comfort zone in other areas of your life. Most importantly, don’t worry about the thoughts or words of others, as your own thoughts far outweigh those of others.

What do you like most about being dark-skinned?
My dark skin is beautiful, unique, and natural; I love that when I walk into a room, my dark skin speaks for itself. I adore that my skin looks amazing with any color and that it is mine!!
Isn't Rocquelle a gem!? Rocquelle I love your confidence and thank you so much for sharing your story with us. I also love the advice you gave; we should stop comparing ourselves to others and only surround ourselves with others who embrace us for who we are! Don't forget to check out Roquelle's blog Consider Me Lovely, and you can catch her tweeting @ConsiderMeLuvly.

Neon Brights & Acid Wash Jeans

Hey Everyone!

Hope you all are doing lovely and feeling great.

Are you guys loving neons and bright colors as much as I am?! I admit, I used to hate wearing neon colors, especially neon yellow, because I felt that my complexion was too dark. But as my blogger friend Reiko says "color is our friend" lol! Girl it is. So when I came across this neon yellow blouse on clearance at Old Navy I knew it was coming home with moi. I like the semi-baggy fit which allows me to wear it slightly off the shoulder. The shirt is also so versatile. You can dress it up or down, and it would also look cute with a skinny belt around the waist.

And let's not forget to mention the shoes! I've been eyeing them on the Call It Spring Website for sometime now.  I was waiting for the price to go down before I bought them and when it went down to $20.00, I was on it.  I was a little apprehensive at first because one: they are satin, two: I usually dont wear heels this short, and three: pointed toe shoes kill my feet! But all my worries went away when I got them. The color is great, the height of the heel is cute, and yes these babies definitely need to be broken in a little, but they're doable.

I copped the jeans from H&M for $10.00 during the summer. These are one of my favorite jeans. I did a little distressing to them and I used my sewing machine to make them more skinny at the ankles.

Made this with the picstitch app on my phone. This picture might look familiar if you're my friend on instagram (cherriej).

Earrings LBS ($1.00)
Neon Yellow Blouse- Old Navy ($11.42)
Acid Wash Jeans: H&M ($10.00)
Hot Pink Heels: Call It Sping ($20.00- buy here)

Not bad for an outfit around $40.00 right?! I am so ready for spring!

Hope you enjoyed this post!

Dark-Skinned Girls Rock!: Erica

Hey everyone,

Hope you all are doing lovely and feeling great!

Next up on the Dark-skinned Girls Rock! series is the gorgeous Erica of The Glamorous Gleam! I first discovered Erica's fabulous beauty and fashion blog via the The Fashion Bomb. She was featured as the Fashion Bombshell of the Day and I loved her style and thought she was so stunning.

Erica
Everybody meet Erica! She's a 29 year old Bibliographic Assistant, and Freelance Makeup Artist & Hairstylist in her spare time. She's reppin Brooklyn, NY y'all (my home when I go back to NY)!

Describe yourself in 3 words. Savvy, Bubbly, Glamtabulous

Tell us about your personal style.

My style is pretty much laid back and spontaneous. I dress according to my mood and tend to wear a lot of neutral colors with a few brights thrown in here and there to spice it up. I've also been playing with prints a little more as of late. I love to accessorize with my makeup, bags and shoes.

Who are your style icons?
I love Rihanna. Well the Rihanna with the short black haircut, right after her first style transformation. She was fierce. I like Beyonce, Kourtney Kardashian and Victoria Beckham as well. Kelly Rowland has also been stepping up her style game as of late.

Have you ever struggled with self-identity issues because of your complexion? If so what are some things you did to accept yourself for who you are and love yourself?
I've definitely struggled with self-identity issues because of my complexion. Coming up in the 80's and 90's, light-skinned was in. Children were mean and I was often teased for having darker skin. As I grew older and boys showed interest, I would always get "you're pretty for a dark-skinned girl" as to say that dark-skinned girls aren't supposed to be be pretty. I still get this a lot from men. It used to make me feel inferior and lower my self esteem, but I  just grew out of it as I got older. I learned to embrace my complexion and all of me... big forehead, full lips and all.  I am beautiful and I don't care what other people thinks.

Do you have any advice for other dark-skinned women that are struggling with accepting themselves because of the color of their skin?
Love your skin. Don't be afraid to step out of the box and try new things. Color does wonders. I love bright makeup and bright nails. Bright colors are gorgeous with the contrast of dark skin, they stand out more. It's all about execution. Most important, love yourself. The color of your skin enhances your beauty. You are beautiful my fellow dark-skinned Divas!

What do you like most about being dark-skinned?
I love my smooth chocolate skin and how it turns mahogany in the Summer. I love how colors pop on me and stand out more, demanding attention. I love that I don't fall into the "typical" category of what is considered beautiful,  and that I am beyond it.

Erica I love your confidence! This is my favorite quote from you, "I love that I don't fall into the 'typical' category of what is considered beautiful,  and that I am beyond it." *two finger snaps*! Love it lol. And yes dark-skinned ladies, just because we have darker skin we should not be afraid to step out of the box and try new things. Thanks again Erica for participating the in DGR! series. Make sure to check out her blog, The Glamorous Gleam. And you can catch her tweeting @MzMore!

Black & White, Stripes on Stripes.

Hey Everyone,

Hope you all are doing lovely and feeling great.

I participated in the Blog Trends  chat on twitter last night and I am soooo glad I did. Its a great chat to participate in especially if you are a newbie blogger. You learn so much on how to grow and improve the quality of your blog. I received so much great advice and I'm really excited to put it into action. The chat is at 9pm EST on Mondays. You can read up on the Blog Trends convo from last night, here!

Anywho, this is the outfit that I wore on my actual birthday, February 27th. The banging bumble bee dress (as I like to call it), from this post is what I wore for my bday celebration a couple of days earlier. When I purchased this amazingggg blazer I knew I was going to wear it on my bday. Originally I had planned to wear red jeans with it, but for some reason I opted for a striped dress that day and I'm glad I did because the stripes on stripes look great together! Its a good thing that I decided not to wear the red jeans because I tried to wear them today and they wouldn't go past my thighs lol.  I guess I will be giving them away and back on the search for a pair of red jeans.

On my bday I had work and class until 9pm, so I wanted to look cute, comfy, and not too overdressed. I received so many complements on this outfit.  The oxfords were a last minute shoe change. I planned on wearing the black wedge booties I wore this post, but I didnt want my feet to be begging for mercy at the end of the day.

This facebook birthday wish made my day. Very inspirational...God's anointing teaches me all things. And yes my real name is not Cherrie lol. Cherrie is my household nickname (you learn something new everyday huh!).

Earrings: LBS
Necklace: H&M
Watch- Guess (Gifted)
Oxford Booties: Brucco
Striped Dress-F21 (similar here)
Blazer & Black Tights: Conway
Ring: Gifted from my mom
Bracelet: Stolen from my friend Angie lol

Hope you enjoyed this post!

Dark-skinned Girls Rock!: Kerryanne

Well hello there everyone!

Hope you all are doing lovely and feeling great!

Next up on the DGR series, is my buddy Kerryanne. We went to college together and its so funny how we met. During Freshman orientation we were standing on line to get our pictures taken for our School ID's. We started talking to each other and ended up becoming friends on Facebook. Although we never had a class together, we managed to keep in contact via facebook. Kerryanne and her bff recently started a blog called Bold and Out Loud! Make sure you head over there and check it out!!

Kerryanne Burke
Everybody meet lovely Kerryanne! She's a 23 year old JD candidate at New York Law School and the co-creator of Bold and Out Loud. She reppin' Queens, NY y'all (my hometown)!

Describe yourself in 3 wordsCreative, passionate, and cultured.

Tell us about your personal style. Unique, ethnic, glam,  and subtle, but everlasting in your mind.

Who are your style icons? Jessica White, Chanel Iman, and Tracee Ellis Ross.

Have you ever struggled with self-identity issues because of your complexion? If so what are some things you did to accept yourself for who you are and love yourself?
I always knew that within my race there was a divide, a preference for lighter toned people. I would say that it bothered me that our history, of slavery, created this post traumatic stress and hate syndrome that can't seem to go away. The only problem I had growing up with my complexion, was my acne, which is still an issue. But honestly, I thank God that I come from the family I come from because I never thought of myself less than. What I do have a problem with is guys who say,"you are pretty for a dark skin girl," "she is beautiful for a darkie," or call me "dark and lovely." I am not a hair dye box and pump those breaks on the back-handed compliments-- dudes.

Do you have any advice for other dark-skinned women that are struggling with accepting themselves because of the color of their skin?
I think apart of loving the skin you're in is predicated on loving your entire identity and understanding your culture, history, and worth. The best advice I can give is to soul search and connect with the truth about being Black. Once you do that the color of your skin will just be an element that depicts your power, strength and ability to live against all odds and adversity.

What do you like most about being dark-skinned?
What I like most about being dark skin is that I can wear some bright colors and it pops. Not to mention I don't burn or peel in the sun. LOL

Talk about beauty and brains!! I love how you said "I'm not a hair dye box"...that is too funny!! I also love the advice you gave to other dark-skinned women about accepting their idenity. It is true...before we can love our complexion, we must love our entire identity! Thanks Kerryanne for participating. Kerryanne also had a youtube channel. You can Check out her hilarious videos here

Birthday Outfit: "All You Need Is a Motorcycle"

Hey Everyone,

Hope you all are doing lovely and feeling grea!. I'm sooo happy that the weekend is almost here because I start Spring Break! Whoop whoop! Unfortunately, I still have a lot of work to get done during the break. One of my professors actually scheduled a presentation the Monday after the vacation. Trifling right?!  :sigh: but the show must go on. Anywho, I told you guys that I would give you details on, and post more pics of the dress I wore for my birthday celebration. We went to a lounge called Play. I really wanted to do something more laid back this year so Play was it! The spot is really cool and I will definitely be going back! It has a dance floor, bowling, bull riding, a full bar, and much more...I guess you can say its an upscale Dave & Busters lol.

One of my friends said all I needed a motorcycle lol, hence the title of this post! I concur. I think I would look pretty hot on a motorcycle in this outfit right? Haha lemme stop!
Yes I know you can't really see my shoes. I gotta stop taking pictures on this floor when I'm wearing black shoes. But they are the same booties seen in this and this post!

Sans the jacket. The dress was actually purchased over a year ago. I was scared to wear it because it reminded me of a bumble bee lol. I know...I'm so silly. I usually buy a bday outfit every year but I'm so proud of  myself for shopping my closet this year. I didn't buy anything new expect for the hoisery and the earrings (which were only $1.00!!).

Earrings: LBS
Booties: Bakers (Susie)
Faux Leather Jacket: G+G
Dress: Necessary Clothing (SoHo NYC)
Stockings: Store on Jamaica Ave & 165th street NY

Close up of my makeup and earrings. If you're my friend on Instagram (my username is CherrieJ; hit me up), this picture might look familiar to you. I used the Coastal Scents Fall Festival Palette on my eyes, and Covergirl Hot Red lipstick for my lips.

Hope you enjoyed this post!

P.S. Yea yea yea...I know I need to work on my poses. Hand on hip and head tilted to the side in every pic is not the business.
