Coral Jeans & Color Splash

Hey Everyone,

Hope you all are doing lovely and feeling great! I visited my parents in the Poconos this past weekend and this is what I wore to church. The dress code of my parents' church is very laid back so I decided to rock a pair of coral jeans (even though they look pink in some of the photos) and a color-splashed dress turned tunic. My dad kept telling me that my pants were too tight for church...but I know him all to well--he just didn't like the color of my pants because they are not tight at all lol. I think that he thought that telling me that my pants were too tight would make me change them, but it wasn't happening. Parents, I tell ya!

Dark-skinned Girls Rock!: Deetra

Hey Everyone!

Hope you all are doing lovely and feeling great. Its Monday! So yes, another lovely lady will be featured for the Dark-skinned Girls Rock! series. Today we're featuring a reader of CherrieAmore named Deetra! Find out more about her below.
Deetra La’ Rue
Everybody meet Deetra, shes a writer from Montgomery, AL!

Describe yourself in three words. Beautiful, Funny and Talented.
Tell us about your personal style.
I love fashion, but despise trends, because then you lose your sense of individuality and start to look like everyone else. I “beat to my own drum” , and DO NOT entertain others opinion of me, because I dress to appease and please me. I typically gravitate towards anything black, but I am starting to branch out and try different colors, because I should be proud of my body and not hide it (hence the black).

Who are your style icons?
A few style icons I enjoy are Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, and Kim Kardashian (when she’s NOT trying to be overly sexy).

Have you struggled with self-identity issues, because of your skin complexion? If so, what are some things you did to accept yourself for who you are and love yourself?
As a teenager, I was always concerned about the color of my skin. I didn’t really date, because I thought nobody wanted me, considering the fact that all the guys were into the “long haired, fair-skinned girls”. At one point, I felt almost inferior to them, because I was not only dark-skinned, but plus sized as well. However, I learned that we are ALL equal and no one is more beautiful than the other, just because her hair is longer and skin is lighter. I began to tell myself that I am beautiful inside and out, and if someone can’t accept that, then I can’t accept their shallowness.
Do you have any advice for dark-skinned women that are struggling with accepting themselves because of the color of their skin? Never change yourself to fit the description of what someone else says you should be, because in the end you might not like the person you’ve become. ~Deetra La’ Rue

What do you like most about being dark-skinned?
I get to live in a “skin” that was made specifically for ME, and I must say it is GREAT!

Thank you so much Deetra for participating in the series and sharing your story with us!! I admire your confidence. I love how you said that we all are equal and how our skin color nor the length of our hair defines our beauty. I also love your quote " Never change yourself to fit the description of what someone else says you should be, because in the end you might not like the person you’ve become." I believe this too. Sometimes we try so hard to fit in with others that we create a "false identity" for ourselves and end up evolving into a person that we don't like.

My dark-skinned ladies, if you are interested in participating in the DGR! series shoot me an email, cherrie.amore@gmail.com. I need you lovely ladies to submit interviews to keep this series going. So don't be shy! You DO NOT have to be a blogger, fashionista, vlogger, etc. This series is open to all! To find out more about the series, click here!

Knotted Racerback & A Maxi

Hey Everyone,

Hope you all are doing lovely and feeling great! The skirt that I'm rocking in this post has got to be one of my BEST thrift store finds. I was on the hunt for long maxi skirts, and just when I was about to give up and leave the store I spotted this beauty. I tried it on and it fit perfectly! Later when I got home I realized that it was made by Tadashi Shoji!! Ahhhh imagine my excitement. Usually Tadashi Shoji  items run for $200.00 and up and I only paid around $7.00 for this gorgeous skirt...#winning!!

The skirt has thigh high splits in the lining which add an element of sexy.  Sorry that the pics didn't fully capture it. Sigh...I need a photographer!

Safari Print Hi-Low Dress

Hey Everyone,
Hope you all are doing lovely and feeling great! I LOVE myself some hi-low dresses! I am kicking myself for not stocking up on them when Forever 21 had them on sale--but my wallet wouldn't allow me. I did see cute ones at Target the other day, I might go pick a couple up if my budget allows lol.  Anywho, the dress I'm rocking in this post was purchased the same weekend that this dress was. I love it, but I feel like its missing something and its a little too big ontop. The store that I purchased it from didn't have a dressing room and you know how I am about exchanging/returning things so I will just have to "work it out." Maybe next time I will try styling it with a belt around the waist and see how it comes out.

My arms are such my problem area! UGH! I work them out all the time, but they will not get the way I want them to be. I blame it on my mom and here genes! Grr lol.

Dark-skinned Girls Rock!: Mel

Hey Everyone,

Hope you all are doing lovely and feeling great! Today for the Dark-skinned Girls Rock! series we're featuring the lovely Mel of M3llow Yellow. Find out more about her below!

Mel
Everyone meet Mel! She's a 25 year old student from Washington D.C.!

Describe yourself in 3 words: Funny, charming, and chill.

Tell us about your personal style: I like to believe my style is blend of edgy, classic, and androgynous. I take the less is more approach when it comes to selecting my clothes. I'm naturally drawn to clean lines and silhouettes.

Who are your style icons? My style icons are Solange Knowles, Gwen Stefani, Kate Lamphear, and Rihanna.

Have you ever struggled with self-identity issues because of your complexion? If so what are some things you did to accept yourself for who you are and love yourself?
Growing up in the south I would say that I was made aware of my darker hue. Even though I got ridiculed when I was younger about my darker complexion I never developed any issues about it. I guess I have my family to thank for that.

Do you have any advice for other dark-skinned women that are struggling with accepting themselves because of the color of their skin?
I would advise other dark-skinned women to seek the beauty in themselves before they look to others. I know its totally cliche but if you cannot love yourself then who will? Also, I would advise them not to let their skin color be their sole defining factor because they are sooooo much more than that. Another piece of advice I'd like to give is don't confine yourself to colors wether it be clothing or makeup that you think is only suitable for dark skin. Dark skin makes so many colors pop.
What do you like most about being dark-skinned?
What I love about being dark-skin is the richness and regality that embodies our hue. I especially feel this way when I have a summer tan! I love everything about my complexion honestly.

Thank you so much Mel for participating and sharing your story with us! I love how you said that we are so much more than a skin color. And yes ladies don't be scared to rock neon colors or blue eyeshadow...we can wear any color we want! Don't forget to check out Mel's blog, M3llow Yellow, and you can catch her tweeting @M3lloyellow.

Plain & Simple

Hey Eveyone,

Hope you all are doing lovely and feeling great. Last weekend my cousin went skydiving to celebrate his 21st birthday and this is what I wore to the event. I wanted to keep it simple so my oufit is very "no fuss". And if you are wondering, no mam  I definitely did not skydive lol... I barely like rollercoasters so skydiving is a no no. But I'm so happy that I went and was able to share that special day with my cousin. He's been talking about going skydiving for his 21st birthday since forever so I'm glad he actually turned his dreams into reality.

Enjoy the photos! :)

To make my shirt more fitted, I used a safety pin to gather it in the back.

I am currently addicted to Chuck Taylors! I want them in all colors lol. Perfect sneaker for a girly girl because it looks great with most skirts and dresses.

Photobucket
Cut a rip in my jeans the morning of.  I like the ruggedness of it :).

Nerdy Chic

Hey Everyone,

Hope you all are doing lovely and feeling great! If you're my buddy on instagram (@cherriej) this outfit might look familiar to you lol. Im loving this outfit! Its very nerdy chic. Its crazy what a pair of frames can do to an outfit...throw them on and #boom a nerdy look haha.  The shirt originally had a round-neck, but I decided to cut a "v" in the collar because I wasn't feeling the roundness. On the bottom I'm rocking hues of coral...Yes my pants are actually coral even though they look really pink, and my shoes are an orange/coral color. And as I always tell my friends "a belt makes everything look better" lol; I used a belt to give my shirt some shape.

Enjoy the photos!
