Hey Everyone!
Hope you all are doing lovely and feeling great. Its Monday! So yes, another lovely lady will be featured for the
Dark-skinned Girls Rock! series. Today we're featuring a reader of
CherrieAmore named Deetra! Find out more about her below.
Deetra La’ Rue
Everybody meet Deetra, shes a writer from Montgomery, AL!
Describe yourself in three words. Beautiful, Funny and Talented.
Tell us about your personal style.
I love fashion, but despise trends,
because then you lose your sense of individuality and start to look like
everyone else. I “beat to my own drum” , and DO NOT entertain others
opinion of me, because I dress to appease and please me. I typically
gravitate towards anything black, but I am starting to branch out and
try different colors, because I should be proud of my body and not hide
it (hence the black).
Who are your style icons? A few style icons I enjoy are Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, and Kim Kardashian (when she’s NOT trying to be overly
sexy).
Have you struggled with self-identity issues, because of your
skin complexion? If so, what are some things you did to accept yourself
for who you are and love yourself?
As a teenager, I was always
concerned about the color of my skin. I didn’t really date, because I
thought nobody wanted me, considering the fact that all the guys were
into the “long haired, fair-skinned girls”. At one point, I felt
almost inferior to them, because I was not only dark-skinned, but plus
sized as well. However, I learned that we are ALL equal and no one is
more beautiful than the other, just because her hair is longer and skin
is lighter. I began to tell myself that I am beautiful inside and out,
and if someone can’t accept that, then I can’t accept their shallowness.
Do you have any advice for dark-skinned women that are struggling with accepting themselves because of the color of their skin? Never change yourself to fit the description of what someone else says you should be, because in the end you might not like the person you’ve become. ~Deetra La’ Rue
What do you like most about being dark-skinned?
I get to live in a
“skin” that was made specifically for ME, and I must say it is GREAT!
Thank you so much Deetra for participating in the series and sharing your story with us!! I admire your confidence. I love how you said that we all are equal and how our skin color nor the length of our hair defines our beauty. I also love your quote " Never change
yourself to fit the description of what someone else says you should be,
because in the end you might not like the person you’ve become." I believe this too. Sometimes we try so hard to fit in with others that we create a "false identity" for ourselves and end up evolving into a person that we don't like.
My dark-skinned ladies, if you are interested in participating in the DGR!
